Numbers 22:33 Coffee
Numbers 22:33
Balaam is on his way to meet Balak, king of Moab, who wants him to curse the Israelites. Though God initially forbade Balaam from going, He later permitted it under strict instructions. As Balaam travels, riding his donkey, the Angel of the Lord stands in his path as an adversary. Balaam cannot see the angel, but the donkey does and turns aside three times, trying to avoid it. Frustrated, Balaam beats the donkey, until the Lord miraculously opens the donkey’s mouth to speak, and then opens Balaam’s eyes to see the angel. The angel rebukes Balaam, saying, “I would certainly have killed you by now if it weren’t for your donkey.” This moment reveals God’s mercy, using even a donkey to protect Balaam from divine judgment and to redirect him toward obedience.
God rebukes Balaam through the donkey he had beaten. The open-mouthed donkey in the foreground symbolizes the unlikely messenger—humble, alert, and miraculously granted speech—while the radiant angel behind it, sword in hand, embodies divine judgment and intervention. Hovering above, a single glowing eye represents God’s all-seeing awareness and the moment Balaam’s spiritual eyes are opened. Bathed in golden light, the scene reflects the tension between mercy and judgment: though Balaam was blind to the danger, the donkey saw, turned aside, and ultimately saved his life. This moment reminds us that God often speaks through the unexpected to protect, correct, and awaken those He calls.
